Valentines day can be one of the most upsetting days of the year if you are grieving the loss of your ‘Valentine’.

There are so many visual reminders as you go about your days leading up to Valentines day with the significant marketing and the prominent displays of merchandise in all kinds of stores.  It is practically impossible to avoid.  Valentine’s Day can trigger some powerful emotions even if significant time has passed since the death of a loved one.

If Valentines Day was a special day between you and your loved one, then think about starting a new tradition and be your own Valentine.  There is no way of making the day easier or less emotional, so celebrate them and look after yourself.

Perhaps buy yourself a little present.  Light a candle next to a photograph of the two of you.  Find a way to celebrate your love for that special person. And most importantly make sure that you look after yourself.  Grief at any time can be exhausting so it is really important that you acknowledge how you are feeling and if you have someone close to you, or someone that you can confide in, let them know how you are feeling.

It is ok to feel upset, or angry, or alone on Valentine’s Day but finding a way to honour and memorialize your loved one can help channel your thoughts and feelings in a positive way.

Be kind to yourself this Valentine’s Day.

Positive Ageing; an Oxymoron?

We attended the Positive Aging Expo last weekend, and were impressed with the number and variety of groups and agencies represented. It’s a catchy title – ‘Positive Ageing’. It captures the opportunities available to people despite reaching and surpassing their SuperGold card eligibility date; places to live, places to go, activities to do, groups to…
